About MMCA
Midcoast Maine Community Action (MMCA) is a non-profit organization originally founded by Bowdoin College students and faculty as a result of the “War on Poverty” initiative announced by President Lyndon Baines Johnson in the 1960’s.
Incorporated in 1972 as Coastal Economic Development (CED), the Agency continually looks for ways to provide quality programs designed to address issues of poverty. In May, 2007, the name was officially changed to Midcoast Maine Community Action.
Through state and federal grants, private foundations, and donations, MMCA now operates the Head Start program at 7 different locations, WIC (Women, Infants and Children) nutrition programs, housing assistance programs, weatherization and energy conservation programs, as well as job training and retaining programs, family development and case management programs for low-income residents throughout the mid-coast region of Maine.
MMCA’s programs are free of charge and are offered in Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Waldo and Knox counties, as well as the towns of Brunswick, Harpswell, Freeport and Pownal in Cumberland County.
